Herbal Remedies for Depression

Herbal remedies for depression may be beneficial to those who only suffer from depression from time to time or who have a mild case of depression. Not everyone who suffers from depression is clinically depressed or has trouble functioning in their everyday lives. Many people simply feel depressed or sad from time to time. When this happens many people turn to herbal remedies to fight off the blues.

While most herbs are not approved by the FDA to be used medicinally, there are constantly studies going on to gauge the efficacy of certain herbs being used for various conditions. A recent study involved the use of Green Tea to remedy depression and the results are encouraging. It seems that those who drank at least 4 cups of green tea daily were far less likely to suffer depressive symptoms than those who drank only 1 cup or less per day.

When it comes to using herbal remedies for depression, the consensus usually is that such remedies may be helpful to those who suffer from mild or moderate depression but not for those who suffer from major depression. Still, the use of herbs can be a promising alternative for those who do not want to endure the side effects of antidepressant medication.

St. John’s Wort has long been touted as an effective herbal remedy for mild or moderate depression and Sam-e is another popular remedy that is sold online and in stores. For those whose depression keeps them from getting out of bed or going to work, or otherwise functioning in a normal fashion, it is definitely time to consult your healthcare provider but for those who suffer a mild bout of depression now and then it may be worth it to give herbal remedies a try. While certainly not a cure, herbal remedies for depression may be just what the doctor ordered in some cases.
